Just two hours from Atlanta and an hour from both Augusta and Athens, a trip to Washington, Georgia is a journey to a magical place. No wonder Southern Living has named Washington one of the most beautiful small towns in Georgia. The cottage is one of the oldest structures in the state, dating back to the late 1700's. Two brothers who were Quakers from the eastern seaboard, heard about the opportunity to acquire land in Georgia. At the time, Wilkes County was known as the "Ceded Lands" where native Americans, primarily Cherokee and Cree, lived. The cottage is an example of superior craftsmanship for the time and was built from local timber. Nancy Mills Mercer also lived in the cottage as a young girl and went on to found Mercer University with her husband, baptist minister Jesse Mercer. Legend has it that Col. Elijah Clark and John Dooley met in the cottage to make plans to defeat a loyalist militia force nearby at the Battle of Kettle Creek, one of the most pivotal revolutionary battles.
